I want to try 3D printing. How do I get started?
- Explore all the different objects at Thingiverse.com. You can send us a link and we will be happy to print the design for you.
- If you intend on making your own object check out Tinkercad—a free, easy-to-learn online 3D design and modeling tool.
What kind of 3D printer do you have?
We currently have a Prusa i3 MK3 printer
Prusa i3 MK3:
250 x 210 x 200mm print area
0.4mm nozzle diameter
PLA filament (corn derived, biodegradable)
Is there a charge for using the 3D printers?
Yes, the cost for printing is $0.15 per gram of plastic, or filament, used, plus a flat fee of $2.00 per print. For example, if your final project weighs 10 grams, the cost is $1.50 + $2.00 = $3.50. We are unable to accurately estimate how much an object will cost before it is printed.
How long does 3D printing take?
The length of time it takes to print an object really depends on the size of the project. The actual printing process can take anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours, depending on the project. If there are technical difficulties with the file, that will also increase the time it takes. Our 3D printer is in high demand so plan ahead. Queue times are dependent on your specific project and colour selection.
What type of file formats do the 3D printers accept?
Our printer accepts .stl and .obj formats.
What kind of material is used for printing?
We only print using PLA—a corn based, biodegradable, environmentally friendly plastic filament. Please note this filament is NOT food safe.
Can I print more than one colour?
Our printer can only print objects in a single colour at a time, though you're more than welcome to spruce it up with a paint job! Ask a staff member for the current selection of colours available.
How do I submit a file for 3D printing?
You must fill-in our online form. Please send all questions and queries to firstname.lastname@example.org.
